The Troop 861 Cheer.

The Scouts of 61 belt out the Troop Cheer as they go down the hill to the old flag bowl at Camp Rokilio.

It wasn't until that first time hearing the Scouts of 61 shout out the "Troop Cheer" as we strolled down the hill going to flag lowering at Summer Camp that I realized what a special organization I had joined.  It was quite clear then and there that Troop 861 had an espirit des corps that few other troops could match.

In as early as 1962, Bob Taylor, an Assistant Scoutmaster and stepfather of Troop 61 Scout John Voight, introduced it to the troop during a campfire program at Foxfire.  As Mr. Milsted, the original Scoutmaster recalls that it was felt that the troop needed a cheer, much like an athletic team.  In any case, the troop enthusiastically embraced it.

Troop 861 Eagle Scout Ron Spellich recalls the shouting out the troop cheer as one of his fondest memories; "the biggest memory that I have that really rings in my mind is; out at summer camp when you come down the hill.  You're lined up at the top of the hill, before you come down, and you come down you do the Troop Cheer.  And there would be some troops down in the bowl and they'd see you coming and it was pretty obvious who had their act together and who didn't."
